Velvet Light DJ

macOS · DJ lighting automation

You mix.
Your lights follow.

The missing link between your DJ software and your lights. Start a track in djay: Velvet Light DJ recognises it, fires the matching MaestroDMX mood, then steps the lights up on the first big drop. No operator, no timeline to build.

Velvet Light DJ does not create lights. It is a remote control: at the right moment, it presses the right button on your lighting for you.

1

Build your cues

In MaestroDMX, create a few cues. A cue is a lighting mood saved in the box: colours, movement, speed. Make a calm one, a party one, a disco one, a very strong one for drops. You do this once.

2

Connect them

Your Mac and your MaestroDMX box must be on the same network (same router).

3

Let the app read your cues

In Velvet Light DJ, click “Read the cues from the box”. The app learns the name and the strength of each of your cues.

4

Mix

For each track you start, the app picks the best of your cues and sends it to the box, as if it pressed the button. On the drop, it moves to a stronger cue.

What you need

  • A Mac (macOS 14 or newer).
  • A DJ software: djay Pro (best supported), Serato DJ, or VirtualDJ (partly).
  • A MaestroDMX box with your cues already created. Velvet Light DJ is made for MaestroDMX only: it reads your cues from the box and tells it which one to play. Other lighting devices are not supported.
  • Your music files on the Mac or on an SD card, so the app can find the drops.

What it does not do

  • It does not create cues or lights: that stays in MaestroDMX.
  • It does not play music, and does not replace your DJ software or your box.
  • It sends nothing while “Auto lights” is on pause. On the very first launch, it is on pause.
  • It does not take decisions you can't undo: you can change any cue by hand, at any time.
CueA lighting mood saved in your box, with a number and a name.
DropThe moment a track bursts back in after a quiet part. That's when the lights should go up.
Auto lightsThe switch that lets the app send cues. Off = it only watches.

How it works

Three steps,
nothing to program.

The app reads djay's own history, read-only. Nothing is ever written into djay, and nothing changes in the way you DJ.

  • Reads the history 5 times per second — djay logs each track the second it starts.
  • Cues leave 300 ms early — the same lead as Velvet Show, so lights land on the beat.
  • One switch to stop everything — "Auto lights" can be paused instantly, and starts paused.
  • Fix any track by hand — your choice is remembered for next time.

Full pipeline

djay → history Velvet Light DJ → OSC MaestroDMX → Art-Net DMX fixtures

Live colours

The app window takes the colours of your real fixtures in real time (flowers, towers, beams), received over Art-Net from the MaestroDMX box. A pinnable mini window stays on top, even over djay full screen.

1

Load your cues

The app reads your MaestroDMX cue list and learns what each cue looks like.

2

Play a track

It analyses the file once: style, tempo, and where the first drop hits.

3

Lights follow

Mood on the track start, peak cue on the drop. Correct anything by hand.

Which cue, and why

It picks, it explains,
it learns.

The app never invents lights: it chooses among the cues you created. For every track it proposes its three best and says why. You always have the last word.

  • Rule first — the genre written in the file, then the folder name, then the title.
  • Then what it learned — careful learning: same cue for 2 tracks of an artist, or 3 of a genre, with no contrary choice.
  • Then energy — from the cue's own settings, and finally the tempo.
  • Peak cue on the first real drop — a bass rise of at least 12 dB, never on calm moods.
  • Works with any show — it guesses 23 track styles from your cue names and energy, and asks you to confirm.

Priority order

1 · File genre→ 2 · Folder→ 3 · Title→ 4 · Tempo

Your manual choices and what the app learned always come before the automatic guess.
